The huge cedar trees hold many cavity nesting birds such as owls and wood peckers. Their stumps are often used as dens by bears, wolves, martens, and many other mammals. Second growth and reproduction forests cannot support these animals in the same way that these old forest do. So areas like this are vital sanctuaries to a diverse group of species.
